Common questions
The camera shows no preview.
Open Settings › YESTER and allow Camera. If another app is using the camera, close it and return to YESTER.
Where are my photos saved?
Every original is kept in YESTER first, then the finished photo is saved to Photos. If you do not allow Photos access, the original stays safe in the app.
Do I need to buy eras separately?
No. All seventeen cameras and every editing tool are included with the app. There is no subscription.
I have a new iPhone.
Download YESTER again from the App Store with the same Apple Account. There is no extra charge. Photos kept inside the app move with an iPhone backup or transfer.
Does editing change my original?
No. Edits are stored as a recipe next to the original, so you can return to the original or develop it again.
Why can I not add a date to some photos?
Date stamps use the original capture date. Imported photos without a known capture date do not get one.
The shutter sound always plays.
In some regions the system requires a shutter sound. Elsewhere you can turn on silent mode in Settings.
Does YESTER collect any data?
No. See the privacy policy for details.
How to use YESTER
Seventeen cameras are included, from a 1958 box camera to a 2016 matte filter. Pick an era and shoot; your photo keeps the colour and texture of that camera.
Choosing an era
Drag the year dial above the shutter, or swipe left and right across the photo. The camera behind each era appears briefly as you change. Tap the name under the dial to open the collection of all seventeen.
The 1958 box camera and the 2011 square filter switch to 1:1 as soon as you choose them, and your own ratio returns when you move on.
Shooting
- Tap to set focus and exposure at that point.
- After tapping, drag up or down to adjust brightness.
- Touch and hold to lock focus and exposure (AE/AF lock).
- Pinch to zoom, or use the zoom buttons inside the photo to change lens.
- Choose flash, timer (3 s or 10 s), photo ratio and settings at the top.
Viewing photos
Tap the thumbnail beside the shutter to open the photo full screen. Swipe between photos, double-tap or pinch to zoom, and swipe down to return to the camera. Share, favourite, edit and delete sit at the bottom; the ⋯ menu has the original, a four-era image, file sharing and saving to Photos. The top-left button opens your whole library.
Editing
- Filter — pick one of the seventeen eras, previewed on your photo, and set its strength.
- Adjust — brightness, contrast, warmth, saturation, texture and fade. Double-tap an icon to reset it.
- Crop — choose a ratio and drag the frame. Rotate 90°, mirror and straighten with the ruler (double-tap for 0°).
- Decorate — seven print frames, a handwritten note, light leaks, dust and scratches, date styles, the YESTER mark and original location.
Use Original to compare in place, and undo or redo any step. Choose Initial development in the ⋯ menu to return to the settings the photo was saved with. Editing never changes the original, so you can come back and change your mind.
Sound and haptics
Each year has a shutter sound inspired by cameras of its time. Preview it in Settings, and turn silent mode and haptics on or off separately. In some regions the system shutter sound always plays.
Keeping and saving
Every original is kept in the app first; the finished photo is then saved to Photos. If you don't allow Photos access, the original stays safe in the app. Deleted photos can be restored or removed for good from Recently Deleted in the library.
Location
Finished photos and comparisons leave location out by default. If the original has location data, you can include it under Decorate › Info. YESTER never collects a new location.
When the device is warm
YESTER briefly lowers preview resolution and frame rate when the device is warm. The photos you save are not affected.
